History in the Baking!

The story of The Wicked Cake Company

The Wicked Cake Company was founded in 1991 by Christopher, Edmund and Richard Bliss. The three brothers owned a delicatessen and sandwich business, based in Cambridge, and in order to solve the problem of finding high quality cakes, they decided to make use of the kitchen space above the shop and bake their own. The result of this enterprise was an exciting and original range of high quality tray cakes. Wicked Chocolate Biscuit Cake rapidly acquired cult status amongst the local university students and responding to increasing demand, the business grew and the company began supplying other catering and retail outlets in and around Cambridge. The ‘Wicked’ word soon spread and the brothers found themselves supplying cakes across East Anglia and, in more recent years, across the entire UK.

The name ‘Wicked’ came from one of the brothers’ very first cakes – Wicked Chocolate Biscuit Cake – made to an old family recipe. Following on from this success – and always using the very best ingredients – an entire range of Tray Cakes was developed including Fudge Slices, Flapjacks and Shortbreads.

By the early 1990s, the company had established a van sales operation covering East Anglia and the South East with a range of products that had increased to 22 lines.  Customers were mostly independent outlets who were able to take advantage of the variety of long shelf-life products, which could be used as a range on their own or to supplement a selection of fresh cakes. Flapjacks, Shortbreads and Biscuit Cakes proved to be the most popular lines.

In 1995, the company moved from the kitchens above the shop to a 4,000 sq ft factory on the outskirts of Cambridge. As demand continued to grow, the company made a strategic decision to concentrate its efforts on manufacturing and to supply to Wholesalers on a national basis.

Expansion continued and by 1999 a decision was made to extend the bakery even further. Listening to customer feedback, a range of individually-wrapped Cake Bars, Flapjacks, Muffins and Cookies was developed to meet a rapidly growing demand from the snacks market.

The Wicked Cake Company has built a strong reputation for providing high quality, long shelf-life, ambient storage cake products to both the food service and the retail sector. In 2009, the company acquired BRC accreditation Grade A, and has maintained this ever since.

In 2011, The Wicked Cake Company moved to a new, purpose-built 22,000 sq ft factory in Haverhill, Suffolk, providing the necessary space to meet the constantly growing demand from customers throughout the UK.
